The New York Police Department's bomb squad has been called to the Bronx.

But contrary to Twitter rumors, the squad wasn't there to handle a bomb but rather a hand grenade.

The squad responded to 238 Street and Waldo Avenue, Twitter account @NYScanner tweeted a little after 3 p.m.

Twitter account @911Buff also reported the news.

While both @NYScanner and @911Buff have tweeted there is a bomb at the scene, the NYPD would not comment this afternoon to Business Insider on details about the device and dismissed suggestions circulating on Twitter that the device was a bomb.

The device turned out to be "a grenade that was rendered safe," according to a police source who spoke with Gothamist.

While officials didn't know where the grenade came from, they did stress that there was no bomb and no terrorism threat.
