Police finally recaptured a 17-year-old suspect who escaped custody Monday morning and fled into the subway system wearing handcuffs, Reuters reported.

Service on four New York City subway lines was shut down for nearly 90 minutes to help police in their search, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

Vincens Viktilaj, suspected of grand larceny, had been handcuffed and was being led down a flight of stairs in his apartment building around 10:30 a.m. when he escaped, an NYPD spokesperson told Business Insider.

He ran into a subway station on St. Nicholas Avenue in West Harlem, and was arrested six hours later, after emerging from a subway station one stop away, according to Reuters.
