A man who committed suicide in Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral Tuesday was a right-wing essayist named Dominique Venner, Reuters is reporting.
The cathedral was evacuated after the 78-year-old killed himself in front of the main altar in front of hundreds of tourists, the French publication Le Parisien reported.
"There was screaming and ... shouting following a loud bang," one source told the Daily Mail. "People were naturally very scared and began to run out in panic."
Venner was an ardent opponent of gay marriage, which became legal in France this month.
In a blog post on Tuesday, Venner pointed out that the gay marriage law could always be repealed.
