Today the government is expected to announce the penalties awarded to BP for the 2010's Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
According to one source who spoke to the AP, BP has agreed to the "largest criminal penalty in U.S. history, totaling billions of dollars." While the exact figure hasn't been mentioned, previously around $14 billion had been floated.
The source said that BP will plead guilty to obstruction for lying to Congress, and that two BP employees are facing manslaughter charges over the death of 11 people in the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig.
The current record is held by Pfizer Inc, which paid a $1.3 billion fine in 2009 for marketing fraud.
