When a 2001 Wake Forest law grad learned his onetime professor was fighting for his life, the former student didn't hesitate to help.
Chris Beechler donated a kidney to Dave Pishko, a practicing attorney in the area who serves as an adjunct professor at the law school, The Winston-Salem Journal reported earlier this month.
Beechler is a trial lawyer in Winston-Salem.
Pishko, who suffers from a hereditary condition called polycystic kidney disease, told his former student over lunch one day that he would need a transplant. Beechler didn't hesitate to step up.
“His reaction was, ‘I’ll give you one. I’ll get tested,’” Pishko told the Journal. “It stunned me. We’ve been friends for a long time. He didn’t hesitate. Chris can kid around, but he made sure I knew he was serious and that I didn’t have to ask.”
But, according to Beechler, the choice was an easy one to make.
“Why not do this for a friend?” he told the Journal. “When I thought about what it could provide for him, his family and the people he may touch in the future … it will cost me nothing more than time, inconvenience and some short-term pain.”
The surgery was scheduled to take place mid-December. Wake Forest posted the Winston-Salem Journal story on its website, pointing out that Beechler was Pishko's former student.
