The man who once represented O.J. Simpson and Patty Hearst isn't allowed to practice law in Maine even though he passed the state bar exam.

F. Lee Bailey passed Maine's bar exam in February, but the State of Maine Board of Bar Examiners decided he didn't sufficiently prove he "possesses the requisite good character and fitness necessary for admission to the Maine Bar," according to The Sun Journal.

Bailey was licensed in Massachusetts and Florida but was disbarred in the early 2000s for mishandling $6 million in stock for a client, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.

He spent 44 days in federal prison for the misconduct and had to repay millions of dollars.

The Maine decision came in a 5-to-4 ruling that pointed to a Maine Bar rule that requires the state to treat a lawyer who had been disbarred in any state "as if the attorney has been disbarred also in Maine."
