Seven Elite UK Marines Have Been Arrested On Charges Of Murder In A Combat Zone

british royal marines

British military police on Thursday arrested seven members of the elite Royal Marines on suspicion of murder in Afghanistan in 2011, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced.

"The incident followed an engagement with an insurgent -- there were no civilians involved," said an MoD spokesman.

The investigation will now be conducted by the Service Justice system, which handles offences committed by British service personnel overseas, added the spokesman.

"These arrests demonstrate the department and the Armed Forces' determination to ensure UK personnel act in accordance with their Rules of Engagement and our standards," said the MoD statement.

The department said it would not be releasing any more information about the arrests, but vowed to conduct an internal review "to identify lessons learned.

"The nature of that review will reflect the developments in and, in due course, the outcome of the investigation," it added.

The Royal Marines, or "green berets", were formed in 1755 as marine infantry for the Royal Navy and have a reputation as some of the toughest military professionals in the world.

Britain still has some 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, all of whom are due to leave by the end of 2014.

Some 433 British personnel have been killed in the country since the start of the operation against the Taliban in 2001.

Prosecutors in April decided not to charge a British soldier with the murder of an Afghan man who had been digging near a military base in Helmand.

Duane Knott, a member of the Territorial Army volunteer reserve force, was investigated after shooting the man who he mistakenly believed was laying booby-trap explosives.

The Service Prosecuting Authority, set up to conduct independent prosecutions of military personnel, concluded there was no "realistic prospect of a conviction in this case."

The Author Of The 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' Books Has Filed For Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

Rich Dad, Poor Dad

Robert Kiyosaki, author of the bestselling "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" series, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection after losing a nearly $24 million court judgment to The Learning Annex, The New York Post reports

As one of Kiyosaki's earliest backers, The Learning Annex was responsible for arranging the speaking engagements and platform that led to his massive success.

But apparently the fame went to his head because according to court papers obtained by the Post, Kiyosaki, who published his first "Rich Dad" book in 1994, never paid the Annex its rightful share. Said founder and chairman Bill Zanker: "Oprah believed in him, and Will Smith believed in him, but he didn't keep his promise to us."

Kiyosaki's Rich Global company was ordered by a U.S. judge in April to cough up $23,687,957.21, which in turn led him to file for corporate bankruptcy on Aug. 20.

Despite the blow to the personal finance guru's reputation, Kiyosaki probably won't feel the pinch in his wallet. Forbes pegs his net worth around a cool $80 million, and Kiyosaki, who's written 11 books, operates as many as ten other companies. Rich Global was said to be worth a few million when it went under.

"Rich Dad, Poor Dad" became an overnight sensation when Kiyosaki made the rounds on feel-good daytime TV like "Oprah" and aired his speaking programs on PBS. Cash-strapped consumers identified with his inspirational story of learning how to manage money from one father who struck it big and another who died penniless and alone.

Of course, not everyone bought into the schtick. As Helaine Olen's wrote in Forbes Thursday, the guru's "tips ran the gamut from ridiculous to illegal and downright hurtful and included advocating for insider trading, arguing for the purchase of multiple real estate properties with little or no money down and telling followers they could purchase stocks on margin via unfunded brokerage accounts."

One Canadian Spy Confessed To Trashing The Most Top-Secret Intelligence Network In The World

Stone Ghost

A Canadian naval intelligence officer has pleaded guilty to spying for Russia over four-and-a-half years, Steven Chase and Jane Taber of The Globe and Mail report.

Sub-Lieutenant Jeffrey Delisle, 41, pleaded guilty to criminal charges of  “communicating with a foreign entity” and "breach of trust" for funneling top military secrets from his post at the ultra-secure Trinity naval intelligence center in Halifax to Russia for about $3,000 a month.

A prosecutor at the bail hearings cited intelligence sources who feared the scandal could throw Canada’s relations with allied intelligence organizations“back to the Stone Age.”

Delisle also had access to reports on organized crime, political players and senior defense officials as well as personal information regarding members of the intelligence community. But what international officials are most outraged about is perhaps Deslisle's compromising of a system called the "Stone Ghost".

The Stone Ghost links intelligence networks between the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada — the "Five Eyes".

So while Delisle searched Canadian databases for the term “Russia" he was not only scouring Canadian intelligence but that of the Five Eyes aas well. Once he located what he was looking for, the Canadian officer sent the information to a USB memory stick before dropping it into the body of an email and saving it to the draft folder.

His Russian handler would then log into the same account, take the information and save a draft message in response.

In mid-2007 the Canadian Forces member walked into the Russian embassy in Ottawa as his decade-long marriage was unraveling and offered his services for “ideological reasons,” The Globe and Mail reports.

Russia and Delisle even set up an escape plan: he could walk into a Russian embassy and inform them he was “Alex Campbell." The Russians would then ask him “Did I meet you at a junk show in Austria?” And he would reply: “No, it was in Ottawa.”

mayor mary ella hixon

The 91-year-old mayor of River Falls, Ala. doesn't have to spend any time inside a jail cell even though she admitted to stealing thousands from the town.

Mayor Mary Ella Hixon pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing $201,610 in city money in the last three years, with most of it going to family and friends, The Associated Press reported Friday morning.

Hixon, who admittedly got special treatment because of her age, was sentenced to 10 years behind bars but won't actually serve any of that. She is on probation for five years though and must repay the money.

"Had it not been a 91-year-old woman, I would have stood on my head to make sure she went to prison," Covington County District Attorney Walt Merrell told the AP.

Hixon is one of the state's longest-running mayors and was just re-elected in August.

A televangelist famous for his vehement anti-gay attitude apparently takes his beliefs very seriously.

The American Center For Law & Justice, a conservative Christian legal group founded by Pat Robertson, ended the employment of its senior counsel late last month after blogs reported he was gay, Metro Weekly reported earlier this week.

Both Exposed Politics and The Patriot-Ombudsman reported that James Henderson, who is married and has eight kids, had a secret homosexual life.

The center acknowledged to Metro Weekly that Henderson no longer worked there that but didn't comment on the specifics.

Henderson sent all inquiries to his lawyer, who declined to comment.

Red Bulls Stabbing Suspect Made It On A Plane Before Being Put On 'No Fly' List

Spot Where Red Bulls Coach Michael Jones Was Murdered

The man suspected of killing a popular youth soccer coach on a busy New York City street before fleeing to Mexico left a note with his brother saying he was "sorry," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Thursday.

Orlando Orea, also known as Orlando Gutierrez or Orlando Estevas, bought a one-way ticket on an Aero Mexico flight with cash moments before it was scheduled to leave from Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday morning. He is suspected by police of slashing 25-year-old Michael Jones to death last weekend in Manhattan's Union Square.

Police said part of the note read: "I love you guy very much. I hope you can forgive me." It closed with, "I'm sorry."

Jones was attacked early Sunday on 14th Street. Police arrived to the bloody scene where Jones had been slashed in the neck and torso and his ear sliced off. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Liverpool, England, native was a coach with the New York Red Bulls Youth Training Program. He lived in West Harrison, in Westchester County

Police learned Orea's name at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday and placed him on a no-fly list, but he'd already gone. Kelly said Thursday they know what village he is in, and authorities were working to indict him and, hopefully, to extradite him. Kelly said several agencies, including NYPD, U.S. Department of State and INTERPOL, as well as authorities in Mexico, were working together to track Orea down. The 32-year-old is from Puebla, police said.

"We're doing everything we can to put the process in motion to get this individual back here," he said.

Police say they don't know what led to the killing and were ruling out the possibility that it was a case of mistaken identity.

The New York Red Bulls, a Major League Soccer team, held a memorial Wednesday in Westchester County attended by hundreds.

Jones' body is being returned to England. His family lives in Tarleton, near Liverpool.

Mexican Cartels Are Flooding US Cities With High Quality Meth

$

meth

Mexican cartels are pumping exceptionally cheap, high quality methamphetamine into the United States, Jim Salter of The Associated Press reports.

Cartel meth—which is 90 percent pure—now accounts for as much as 80 percent of the meth sold in the U.S., according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

And from 2007 to 2011 the purity skyrocketed while the price tumbled from $290 per pure gram to less than $90, a combination that hooks people on the fast, intense and long-lasting high.

The meth is being made on an industrial scale in sophisticated factories using formulas developed by professional chemists and then smuggled into the U.S., where it flows through the same pipeline as cartels use to funnel marijuana and cocaine—meaning that increasingly large quantities are turning up in key American cities such as Denver, Dallas and Chicago.

Jack Riley, the agent in charge of the the DEA's Chicago office, told The AP that the DEA is worried that the city's 180,000 street gang members will begin meth trafficking and cause the rising murder rate to go even higher.

Salter notes that cocaine remains cartels' most profitable drug—the RAND Corp. estimates the annual street value of coke to be about $30 billion, heroin about $20 billion and meth about $5 billion—but while Colombian-made cocaine gets progressively more expensive and less concentrated, tons of potent cartel meth is being made in Mexico.

A huge implication of all of this is that the 'war on drugs' has gotten even more insidiousespecially if the U.S. government is colluding with cartels to bring drugs into America.

The American Who Flew To LA With Battle Gear In His Luggage Will Appear In Court Today

yongda huange harris bulletproof vest

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after authorities found he was carrying a suitcase full of weapons could find out Friday whether he will remain behind bars or be freed.

A detention hearing is scheduled for Yongda Huang Harris, 28, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Abrams. Harris could be remanded back into custody if he's determined to be a flight risk or a danger to the public. He's been charged with one count of transporting hazardous materials, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Harris was arrested last week during a stopover trip from Japan on his way to Boston. He was wearing a bulletproof vest under a trench coat and also wore flame-retardant pants and knee pads.

A search of Harris' checked luggage uncovered numerous suspicious items, including a smoke grenade, knives, body bags, a hatchet, a collapsible baton, a biohazard suit, a gas mask, billy clubs, handcuffs, leg irons and a device to repel dogs, authorities said.

Harris' motives remain unclear, partly because he hasn't cooperated with federal authorities. Chris Williams, a spokesman for Harris' attorney Steven Seiden, said Harris was following his attorney's advice to exercise his constitutional right to remain silent.

Harris is a U.S. citizen whose permanent residence is in Boston, though he recently started living and working in Japan, officials said.

He did get off his flight in South Korea before he headed to Los Angeles. South Korean security officials screened Harris and his carry-on luggage, but the smoke grenade made it onto the plane in his checked luggage, according to a U.S. Homeland Security official briefed on the investigation. The official was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The smoke grenade was X-rayed by police bomb squad officers in Los Angeles, who said the device fell into a category that is prohibited on board passenger aircraft. It is banned from planes under the United Nations' explosives shipping rules.

Most of the items wouldn't violate Transportation Security Administration guidelines for what is permissible in checked luggage, and the protective vest and pants are not listed among items prohibited on flights.

London Lawyers Are So Poor They Can't Even Afford Homes In The City

yachts london

Corporate law partners in New York City rake in anywhere from $1 million to $2 million annually.

Sounds pretty ritzy to us.

And with those salaries, New York partners can afford just about any kind of apartment they want.

Too bad things aren't so posh across the pond.

Above The Law blogger Mark Hermann recently moved to London and found out, much to his shock, that partners at major London firms can't afford to actually live in the city unless they're rolling in family money or bought their house some time in the previous century.

London partners at top firms made an average salary of $843,000 in 2010, according to British legal recruiter Edwards Gibson. That's less than New Yorkers make, and the London housing market is even more brutal than the one in the Big Apple.

Case in point: A London apartment similar to Hermann's "perfectly nice (but small) two-bedroom, two-bath apartment (or “flat,” as the locals say) in a perfectly nice building in a perfectly nice part of town," sold in the past year for around $4 million.

Basically, a medium-quality London flat costs "ten times what you’ll pay for great space in Chicago and something like three times what you’ll pay for nice space in New York."

Ouch.

Steven Tyler's Lawyer Is Being Sued For $8M Over Botched 'American Idol' Deal

$

Steven Tyler

Steven Tyler is at the center of a new lawsuit in which his former management company is suing his current lawyer

Management company Kovac Media Group claims attorney Dina LaPolt cost the music superstar a $6 million - $8 million deal to return to "American Idol" for a second season as judge after she botched contract negotiations.

The suit never mentions Tyler by name, but refers to him as “The Artist” throughout the filing and states he is a member in a band who had a judge role for two seasons on the popular Fox show.

According to the 19-page suit,

“In 2011, the Artist's contract on the popular television show "American Idol" was up for renegotiation. TSE and LaPolt were responsible for renegotiating the contract. At the time, the Artist's popularity and media appeal were at their peak. As a result of the Artist's stature, the show's ratings were soaring and the producers of the show wanted to do everything possible to make sure the Artists stayed on as a "judge." Knowing that the Artist was a hot commodity to the show, TSE wanted to employ an aggressive strategy in the renegotiations and leverage Artist's popularity to get a more lucrative contract for him. TSE wanted the new contract to be in line with what other personalities were earning on the show. TSE sought to obtain a contract that would have earned $6-$8 million more annually than the Artist's contract at the time."

Tyler's fellow judge Jennifer Lopez earned a reported $15 million to appear on the show, and left after being denied a $17 million paycheck to stay on another season.

The suit continues about the salary negotiations, saying, "LaPolt undercut [Kovac] TSE’s strategy to leverage the Artist’s popularity for a more lucrative deal. She told American Idol’s agent that Kovac 'overplayed his hand with his aggressive behavior' and that American Idol could get the Artist for cheap, thereby undermining and negating Kovac’s/the Artist’s position in the negotiations."

The suit also alleges that LaPolt then convinced Tyler to fire his former managers and cut Kovac/TSE out of their commission from an "Idol" severance payment.

In addition to the $8 million, Kovac/TSE are also seeking interest, punitive and exemplary damages, legal fees and other costs. The plaintiffs have requested a five-day jury trial.

Tyler and fellow former judge Jennifer Lopez were replaced by Mariah Carey, Nicki Manaj and Keith Urban for the upcoming season of "American Idol."

Hells Angel Yomega Yo-yo

Hells Angels really seems to be more of a gang of litigators than a motorcycle gang nowadays.

The infamous criminal organization, as the Justice Department has labeled it, is suing Toys "R" Us and yo-yo maker Yomega for allegedly infringing its "death head" trademark, Law360 reports.

The suit claims Toys "R" Us is selling a yo-yo bearing the Angels' Death Head symbol, which has gained widespread recognition, according to Law360.

It isn't the first time the Hells Angels have sued for trademark infringement either. Here are some of the rest:

• Alexander McQueen, along with Saks Fifth Avenue, and Zappos, for allegedly selling items that used the Hells Angels' name and Death Head mark.

Disney for allegedly infringing the gang's trademark in the movie "Wild Hogs," which is a comedy about middle-age bikers.

Marvel Comics for publishing a comic book, featuring a character called Hell's Angel.

His client was likely going to jail for the rest of his life, but this attorney reportedly didn't let that pesky little fact get in the way of his good time.

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was sentenced Tuesday to 30 to 60 years behind bars after he was convicted in June of 45 counts of child sex abuse.

But the night before Sandusky's big day, his attorney Karl Rominger was offering to buy Penn State students alcohol, expressly requesting that "coeds" show up to the bar, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Here's the text Rominger sent out, according to SBNation:karl rominger drinking text

This is what Onward State reporter Drew Balis told CrossingBroad.com about the night:

"We walked in there. Rominger was sitting there at the bar and we introduced ourselves one-by-one, joked with him that we were covering the trial and probably shouldn’t be here, but whatever. He went around and bought everybody a drink.

He was pretty relaxed and we asked him a couple of things about [sentencing], and he pretty much said his job was done and, “Tomorrow, I’ll just be praying.” And he mimicked the praying motion."

Rominger was also "tweeting to get a girl to show up," according to Balis.

During one of its popular AskReddit segments, site users asked emergency dispatchers about the most disturbing calls they've ever gotten.

Some of these calls are not only disturbing but absolutely horrific.

We have edited answers for grammar and clarity, and we have added our own emphasis in bold letters.

It took one operator nearly an hour to stop a man from committing a grisly crime.

"I took a call from a guy once who said he had a gun, was going to go inside a residence and rape, then murder a family. Then he said he was going to commit suicide by cop. This is a while ago, but I actually talked him out of it, and had officers on scene as he was getting out of his vehicle. It took me about 30-45 minutes on the phone."

"To this day I can remember that scream she had."

A call taker received a complaint from a girl working at McDonald's who said a group of people were throwing things at the windows.

"I then get a call about 3 minutes later, same girl, 'the group of people are banging on the back door trying to get in!!' I heard her shouting and BOOM a loud noise of screaming and laughing going on. The girl was scared [expletive] started yelling and then...silence."

At this time police were already enroute, and we had multiple calls on this incident. As we waited for the police to get there I received one more phone call from someone parked in the parking lot watching this going on. The female on the phone stated 'A large group of people dragged an employee out of the restaurant and were beating her with something that looks like a pay phone.'"

One Redditer's mother heard a woman commit suicide.

"This girl had a gun in her mouth. My mom could hear it.

After only a minute of talking, she did it. My mom heard the gunshot, and then blabbering. The bullet went through the woman's cheek, but not her skull. She was crying. She was saying she was sorry."

talameda ta'amu arrested

Rookie nose tackle Alameda Ta'amu was arrested early Sunday in Pittsburgh for DUI, aggravate assault with a vehicle, and resisting arrest, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Ta'amu was allegedly driving with a .196 BAC and had to be chased down by police on foot. From The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Alerted to the situation, a fully-uniformed officer who was working an off-duty detail at an East Carson Street bar spotted the vehicle, drew his handgun, and shouted at the driver to halt. Mr. Ta'amu swerved his vehicle, nearly running over the officer. Mr. Ta'amu then sped away in the wrong lane of traffic and the officer pursued on foot.

Meantime, the affidavit notes that two other uniformed officers working off-duty details at local bars drew their guns and gave multiple commands for Ta'amu to stop. Both officers had to dive out of the way to avoid being run over, the document indicates.

As Mr. Ta'amu was being pursued by multiple officers on foot, he crashed his vehicle into a parked car, injuring the driver, Ms. Kosko. Police said she had heavy swelling to her head and was transported to UPMC Mercy from which she was later released.

Ta'amu's car hit yet another parked vehicle and he got out of his car and started running away from the cops on foot. When police caught up to him, Ta'amu resisted being handcuffed and an officer had to punch him in the face and use two sets of handcuffs in order to restrain him.

Ta'amu has a court date October 13.

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert's statement:

"We are disappointed to hear about the situation regarding Alameda Ta'amu. We will gather more facts before providing any further comment."

Walmart Protests

Walmart has been having all sorts of trouble with labor lately. It's currently going through its first multi-store strikes in its 50-year history.

Now, a jury has awarded a former Walmart assistant manager in Canada US$1.5 million — more than she originally sued for — for six months of alleged mistreatment by her store manager, reports Craig Pearson at the Calgary Herald.

The former employee Meredith Boucher claimed that she was subject to "profane and insulting mental abuse" from the manager over a six month span.

From the Windsor Star:

Boucher said that Pinnock regularly spoke abusively to other women, as well, but was less harsh with men.

“He told us we’re all a bunch of [expletive] idiots, and we’re all running around with our heads cut off,” she said, noting that he also called her such things as “stupid” and “a gong show.”

Walmart has called the ruling "perverse," and said that it expects the decision to be overturned on appeal.
